Non-Area, Routine Clients
We are dedicated to meeting the growing need for equine veterinary care in western New York. However, we maintain certain guidelines so that we can continue to provide reliable, quality services. Please remember that in order to remain an official client of Henderson Equine Clinic, as with most veterinary clinics, your horses will need to receive a wellness exam and perform recommended preventative care (such as vaccines) at least once per year. This maintains a valid VCPR (Veterinarian-Client-Patient-Relationship), which allows us to legally provide medical advice or prescribe medications, as necessary.
Our routine coverage area is within one hour of driving time from the clinic. If your horse is stabled outside of one hour from the clinic, you are considered a “Non-Area Client”. We know that there are multiple underserved areas of western New York, and we are dedicated to meeting the needs of as many of these areas as possible. However, in order to provide consistent and reliable emergency services, we are only able to guarantee on-farm emergency services for horses within one hour driving time of our clinic.
What does this mean for you?
We will be happy to schedule you for any routine, non-urgent appointments you may need. We will work with you to offer you the most practical options for scheduling.
If your horse has an emergency or you have an urgent concern, please feel free to call our clinic (or emergency number, depending on the time of day). We are happy to provide telemedicine consults and help guide you in any way we can.
If your horse has an emergency that needs to be seen in-person by a veterinarian, we will likely NOT be able to attend that emergency on your farm. The only exception to this is if the emergency occurs during normal business hours and we happen to have a veterinarian already seeing appointments in your area that day, which is why calling our clinic at the first sign of an urgent issue is important.
If your horse has an emergency and needs to be seen, we will always be willing to attend that emergency AT OUR CLINIC. This means if you are able to trailer your horse to our clinic, we can still guarantee emergency coverage.
Recommendations for an Emergency Preparedness Plan:
If you do not own a truck/trailer, create a list of three other options. These may be friends/barnmates that own trailers and are willing to help in case of emergency. These may also be local hauling companies - please call them ahead of time to make sure they service your area, and to know how they accept payment.
If you do own a truck/trailer, regularly make sure they are road-ready. This includes regular maintenance as well as making sure they are quickly accessible (even when it snows!).
If you use more than one veterinary practice for services, make sure you maintain a valid "client" status with all of them in order to have the best chance of timely care.
