Preventative Medicine, or “routine care,” is one of the most important aspects of veterinary care you can provide for your horse! We are happy to provide a wide variety of veterinary services to promote the best possible health for our patients. If you are in need of an equine service that isn’t listed here, feel free to call our office - we may still be able to help you.

Physical/Wellness Examinations

Wellness exams allow us to evaluate your horse’s health in the context of your facilities and management style. We can often identify concerns before they become major issues. From there, we can make recommendations to improve your horse’s overall wellbeing and help prevent future health emergencies or conditions. After all, horse management plans are not “one size fits all”. Additionally, regular wellness exams provide us with a history of your horse’s baseline parameters. Comparing these to their immediate parameters during an emergency visit will enable us to better determine the severity of their illness or injury.

To keep your horse in the best health possible, we recommend annual (ideally biannual) wellness examinations.  These examinations can be scheduled in conjunction with your spring vaccinations or fall dental care appointments.

Deworming/Vaccinations

Deworming programs vary depending upon a facility’s parasite and horse populations. We often recommend (and can perform) twice yearly fecal egg counts to determine the parasite burden of your horse and the efficacy of your deworming program. Find more information on deworming and common parasites here.

Similarly, a horse’s risk factors (age, travel, showing, or being exposed to incoming animals) determine what vaccination protocols are required.  Find answers to some our vaccination FAQs here.

Dentistry

Horses have hypsodont teeth, meaning they are continuously erupting. That’s why annual (or biannual) dental exams are so important - the sooner we can identify and correct small changes in the dental wear pattern, the easier it will be for your horses to maintain an appropriate grinding surface to digest their food with so they can maintain their body condition. We offer oral exams, power-floating, dental x-rays, and some dental extractions. Read more about our dentistry services here.

Ophthalmic Examinations

Including an ophthalmic exam into your yearly wellness exam can help identify common eye-related diseases, such as uveitis. Starting a treatment regimen early for these diseases can help prolong the life and comfort of your horse’s eye.

Health Certificates, Microchipping, Coggins Tests

Whether your horse is traveling to new boarding barn, an out-of-state horse show, or even to another country, we can help them make the transition safely. Ask us about microchipping, health certificates, and routine Coggins testing.

Surgical Services

While our facility does not include a traditional operating room, we can provide basic surgical services, including castrations and enucleations (eye removals). Feel free to call the office if you have any questions. We are more than happy to refer cases needing extra care to some of our trusted colleagues.

For your next vaccine appointment, ask to add on a Wellness Exam at the same time - your horse will thank you!
